John Dean is Managing General Partner of Startup Capital Ventures, an early stage venture fund which he co-founded with Danny Lui in 2005. Mr. Dean is also an advisory director for various venture capital firms both in the US and overseas, including Advanced Technology Ventures (ATV), Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), Walden International and Authosis Capital.
In 1997 Business Week recognized Mr. Dean as of the Silicon Valley's top 25 "movers and shakers" and, in 2001, Forbes ranked him as one of the "50 most powerful dealmakers."
Mr. Dean has 20 years of CEO experience in financial services, most recently, from 1993 to 2001, as the CEO of Silicon Valley Bank, a leading provider of financial services to early stage technology companies and to venture capital firms.
Mr. Dean has an undergraduate degree from Holy Cross College and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Danny Lui
Danny Lui has over 20 years of experience as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist. In 1982, he founded Daw Computer Systems Ltd., a software company that developed commercial software applications for minicomputers in Hong Kong. In 1987, together with the China Academy of Sciences' Institute of Computing, Mr. Lui co-founded Lenovo (formerly known as Legend Computer), the largest PC manufacturer in China. He led Lenovo' s successful IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 1994, and by 1997, when Mr. Lui left the company, Lenovo was the largest manufacturer of motherboards, with 21 offices worldwide. Lenovo later acquired the PC Division of IBM for $1.7 billion in 2004. Mr. Lui became the Chair of American Pacific Technology Group Ltd., a venture capital firm investing in IC design and wireless and broadband technology companies in Hong Kong, China and the Silicon Valley, and in 2000, he founded Authosis Capital, a venture capital firm focusing on software investments in the U.S. and China. He is also a partner of Startup Capital Ventures and the Vice Chairman of the Board for Zero2IPO.
Catherine Ngo
Catherine Ngo has almost 20 years of legal
and management experience, most recently, as the Chief
Operating Officer of SVB Alliant, the investment banking
affiliate of Silicon Valley Bank. Ms. Ngo led all business
operations for the firm, including IT, Finance, Human
Resources, Legal, and Marketing.
Previously, she was
the Executive Vice President and General Counsel of
Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). In her 10 years as the chief
counsel of SVB, Ms. Ngo managed all legal affairs for
SVB, including for the company's first two venture
capital funds. Ms. Ngo was a founding board member
of SVB¡¯s first two venture capital funds and is currently
a general partner of Startup Capital Ventures. Ms.
Ngo is also an Advisory Director for Zero2IPO.
James Lee
James Lee is currently Vice Chairman of ChinaLabs, a leading Think Tank and Incubator in China. He is also DivX Ambassador and Advisory Board Member for DivX Inc, as well as special advisor for iD TechVentures, CyberLink, and SunPlus. He is also serving as Independent Supervisor at BOD of E-ton Solar Tech. He was with WI Harper as Vice Chairman with a strong background in technology and hi-tech startups. Before joining WI Harper, he was spear-heading the Pacific Century CyberLabs, the incubation arm of PCCW within CyberWorks Ventures. Before PCCW, he worked in Singapore as Special Advisor to Singapore National Science & Technology Board, Strategic Director for national IT research institute Kent Ridge Digital Labs.
Before Singapore, James worked for Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan, as its founding Director of Internet Technology Division. In Taiwan, James initiated and managed many world class Internet pioneering R&D, application and promotion programs, including Taiwan EC Pilot, Internet World Exposition, Java Alliance, etc. Before Taiwan, James worked for many high tech companies in the US: SAS Institute, Silicon Graphics, and GO Corporation. In September 2000, James was elected as on of the "100 Most Influential People to Global Chinese New Economy".
